Maddie is a terrier girl who has had quite a traumatic life sadly 🙁 Maddie first came to us over 3 years ago from the stray kennels and assessed in kennels as the perfect girl! She was super happy and friendly with everyone she met, other dogs, just a fabulous girl! She was quickly taken home by one of our volunteers and adopted However, after a few weeks, maddies little quirks started to come out 😛 she was quite defensive of her home, especially with men, and began to bark at dogs on the lead. Despite seeing behaviourists and trainers, unfortunately her behaviour continued to worsen, and she was returned to the rescue On her return, we wanted to investigate further a sometimes odd gait in maddies rear leg – and the X-rays showed a terrible picture 🙁 An old injury, from long before she ever came to us and was adopted, had healed in the most obscure way, resulting in a twisted femur and irregular pelvis. Maddie had been in chronic pain for most of her life 🙁 Unfortunately the only option was to remove the affected leg. Now fully recovered, Maddie is back to her joyful, running, active self! Life on 3 legs isn’t holding her back! Unfortunately, Maddie still bares the mental scares of what she endured before, and the years of being uncomfortable after. We were hoping her behaviour would improve, but likely this will take a lot more time, and may not ever come completely right. She is still reactive to dogs on walks, and struggles with visitors to the home and needs time to warm up to them, although is good meeting them outside. Maddie will need a very sympathetic, rescue savvy, and committed home to work through her issues, maybe work with a trainer, and be willing to adapt to help this girl finally feel safe and understood, it is a tall order, and most homes will not be suitable, but we cannot give up on her after all she has endured Maddie will greet you like you are the very best person in the world, so it will be easy for a prospective adopter to not believe us when we say she has quirks, they may not come out for a few weeks, so we need a home that does listen to our advice 😍 we know her very well now! Maddie would not be suitable to live with children due to her reactivity and we would not advice being around visiting children tk a home either – she would be better behind a stairgate if needed Maddie bonds closely with her human and is desperate to have that companion again, someone to show her that people can be trusted to not leave
